wraith rider

Just saw this unbelievable motorcycle in my friends Stuff magazine and just had to check it out. I love that it looks like some machine from a comic book or Batman film (Chris Nolan one obviously).

flashdance of the future

Posted by rough house at Thursday, August 14, 2008

Bobba Fett action figure dancing his heart out to Flashdance.....Man that guy can move, considering all that metal plate armour.

sweet meridian

Posted by mightyquin at Thursday, August 14, 2008

Meridian is a short film from Brian Bowman (Creative Director @ Digital Kitchen NY) and cinematographer Rod Lamborn. A mix of timelapse photography (wonderful) and a ethereal semi naked girl (strange) has been a mesmerizing start to my day. link.

the art of books (part 2)

Posted by rough house at Wednesday, August 13, 2008

The work involved in these books/ works of art by Noriko Ambe is incredible. They look weathered/ erroded way over time, revealing the different strata below.

make your own animasher er rer

Posted by mightyquin at Wednesday, August 13, 2008

Yes I'm on about animation again. This time however it is in the form of brand spanking new do it yourself website Animasher. Most clips on the site appear quite basic, however I have had a good look through the library of images and the options when it comes to creating and I think there is some great potential there. link.

flash magazines

Posted by mightyquin at Tuesday, August 12, 2008

These online flash magazines at DQ Books are downright brilliant. A superb collaborative of graphic work and even a soundtrack as you peruse. link.

magic lens

Posted by mightyquin at Monday, August 11, 2008

This lens developed by adobe lets you move around, adjust depth of field and all in realtime in photoshop. Because it is made up of 19 smaller lenses when you take the shot you are recording the image from different angles and depths of field. check the video.

conclave obscurum

Posted by mightyquin at Monday, August 11, 2008

Although some of this portfolio left me feeling mildly unhinged I did still come across brilliant material. The short "cine" or flash films are challenging. The site is just brilliantly built and the sound design is quite melancholic and edgy throughout. This picture above doesn't but the majority of artwork reminds me of the game/movie Silent Hill.

lego covers

Posted by mightyquin at Friday, August 08, 2008

thetoyzone.com has this great compilation of album covers recreated with lego. They are nothing special but I'm posting for the quirkyness. link.

he shoots planes.

Posted by rough house at Thursday, August 07, 2008

Jeffrey Milstein is a plane spotter with a camera and he takes beautiful photos as the aircraft fly overhead. Then he detaches them from their background leaving the odd mechanical beauty of things that really really shouldn't be able to fly......and yet I chose a picture of one of his helicopter photos to illustrate this post.....go figure.

a photographic intervention

Posted by mightyquin at Thursday, August 07, 2008

The Image Fulgurator is like the opposite of a traditional camera. Loaded with exposed slide film it utilizes a flash to project an image on to whatever you point and shoot at. Also check out the video where he f*cks with tourists taking pictures at checkpoint charlie. link.

what happens if you get rid of Jon?

Posted by rough house at Wednesday, August 06, 2008

Garfield Minus Garfield is a site dedicated to removing Garfield from the Garfield comic strips in order to reveal the existential angst of a certain young Mr. Jon Arbuckle. It is a journey deep into the mind of an isolated young everyman as he fights a losing battle against loneliness and depression in a quiet American suburb.

It is pretty odd looking through the cartoons in a whole different light. Quite unsettling, though thought provoking at the same time. I think if you got rid of Jon you would achieve Zen-ness.

Nils Udo

Posted by rough house at Tuesday, August 05, 2008

I've just came across the work of Nils Udo and his amazing work using and exploring nature. In a very similar vein to Andy Goldsworthy. He currently has a piece on show at the Earth Art exhibit in Canada. I wish I could see a tree from my office.

A disquieting series of photographs from artist Alex Sandwell Kliszynski. They are strangely explicit ... but then, not really ... link

the best kind of papercut

I love these unbelievably intricate papercut pieces by artist Peter Callesen - there's plenty of other works on his site worth looking at, but this section is a great starting point. link

the rant about the story of a sign

Posted by rough house at Sunday, August 03, 2008

This short film won the Fourth annual Short Film Online Competition at Cannes 2008 and was directed by Alonso Alvarez Barreda.
I had quite a lot to say about this short film, but everytime I wrote it, I ended up deleting it.
Basically, yeah it's a nice little simple film.......Award winning though? That doesn't say much about the other entrants.

kennedy with a click

Odysseus, Old Stories, Polaroids and Books, all worth checking out on photographer Mikael Kennedy's site. He has a great eye for composition in the most ordinary objects and landscapes.

On 5 May 2008 Pascal Henry set off with the aim of eating at every Michelin Three starred resturant in the world. 68 of them in 68 days. On the June 13th, after finishing his meal but before paying at El Bulli, resturant number 40 on his journey, he disappeared leaving behind only a note book and some photos.

some art deserves it.

Three days ago a visitor to the Royal Academy gallery in London tripped into a 6 foot tall sculpture, sending it crashing to the floor and smashing into hundreds of pieces. But it certainly isn't the first time clumsy people have ruined priceless artworks. Hell .......the sculpture of Venus used to have arms. Here the Independent newspaper has put together a list of Art's great disasters.

watching the watchmen

Posted by Ange at Thursday, July 31, 2008

I'm quite excited about this adaptation of The Watchmen graphic novel to film. The director Zack Snyder of '300' fame obviously still loves abs, however his stylized vision for the material looks spot on. check the trailer here.

You have to check out graphic designer Chris Ro's work on his site ADearFriend. Some super inventive typography and outstanding composition in all his work.

Really like this electronics charging frame by Naolab. Useful but also allows you to always have orginial modern art work on your wall. Clever idea since it would look great even if you only have one gadget.

Steve Zourntos and Susan Armstrong have recreated this wonderful little film based on the boy who cried wolf.

you have 60 seconds

Posted by mightyquin at Thursday, July 24, 2008

I have this habit of coming across these short film competitions after they have finished or just too close to the deadline. The Le.60 competition is borderline, however it is wide open for creativity and restricted to 60 seconds which could make it easier. I'm just hoping I get a chance to get something in...if you manage to create something in time let me know. link.

new pornographers

I really like this style of animation...using real footage and effecting it in post. Some pretty creative ideas within the video.

phd but not in design

Posted by mightyquin at Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Sherwood Forlee went to Princeton to become a Mechanical and Aerospace Engineer, lists playing Minesweeper as one of his skills...but, I think he likes designing. Have a look at his independent work, aren't these speakers great. link.

£50,000

Posted by rough house at Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Fiat are offering £50,000 pounds in a competition to design a new way of travelling from A-B.
Well to be honest the competition page is pretty uninformative at the moment cos it also says....."invent interesting and amusing ways to enjoy a journey from A to B" so I guess that also means entertainment accessories as well........Anyway the competition starts on July 24 and is for residents of the UK only.......
